“Joined”
This chess set explores hand joinery as a design language, pairing cast pewter with wood-turned hard maple so that the connection between materials becomes a central visual feature rather than a detail to hide.
Curved surfaces, fluid and elegant forms, interlocking joinery, stable feel
Brushed metal, flowing wood grain, contrast, material honesty.
Forms were first explored through clay and cardboard models, then refined in Fusion 360 and 3D printed for reference before being resin printed at high fidelity for mold making. Silicone molds were made from the resin prints, then pewter was melted, poured, cooled, and refined through cutting, sanding, and finishing from 220 to 1000 grit. The wood components were lathe-turned or band-sawn and belt-sanded, finished with mineral oil, then pressed together with their pewter counterparts using dovetail, box, and dowel joints.
